About us
We offer programmes in teacher education, sport and leisure studies, counsellor education, human development, education studies and postgraduate study to doctoral level.
At Waikato School of Education you will learn alongside the best. Our lecturers have won several education awards and are recognised for their teaching and research expertise. In the latest Performance Based Research Funding results* we were rated number one in Education in NZ (* when university and college of education scores are combined).
We are also a place of innovation. We were the first teacher education institution in New Zealand to merge with a university and the first to establish an online teacher education degree.
Our programmes are wide in scope. Study opportunities are available in Hamilton, Tauranga and online. Innovative offerings include a one-year graduate teaching programme, three-year bachelors degrees and four-year conjoint degrees. We also offer programmes that prepare students for teaching in bilingual (Maori and English) and Maori medium early childhood and primary school settings.
Our strong professional partnerships with schools and centres and the sport and leisure studies industry, ensures students theoretical knowledge is complimented with practical experiences.

• 1 year Graduate Diploma of Teaching - Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary Teaching
• 2 year Graduate Diploma of Teaching - Secondary/Graduate Diploma in Engineering (Technology Teaching)
• 2 year Graduate Diploma of Teaching - Secondary/Graduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management (Teaching)
• 1 year Bachelor of Teaching with Honours
For qualified and registered teachers:
• Bachelor of Teaching Upgrade (Early Childhood or Primary)
Sport and Leisure Studies
• 3 year Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies
• 1 year Graduate Diploma in Sport and Leisure Studies
• Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies with Honours
• Postgraduate Diploma in Sport and Leisure Studies
• Master of Sport and Leisure Studies
Other Options
• Education Studies and Human Development can be studied in conjunction with a University of Waikato Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Sciences degree.
Graduate Study
We also offer Graduate Diplomas, Postgraduate Certificates, Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters Degrees, a Doctoral of Education and a Doctor of Philosophy. A variety of areas can be studied at graduate level. The School of Education is an integral part of the University of Waikato and has access to university-wide facilities. Onsite at our Hamilton campus is the internationally regarded Wilf Malcolm Institute of Educational Research and the Educational Leadership Centre.
