Timaru Girls’ High School
Location
The school is located in Timaru, less than two hours drive from Christchurch International Airport. Timaru is a sea-side city of 30,000. It is about half way between the Otago University city of Dunedin to the south and Christchurch, the location of Canterbury and Lincoln Universities. The temperature is moderate varying between about 10°C in winter and 25°C in summer.
School Character
Timaru Girls’ High School is a girls-only school of 460 students. It was founded in 1880 and is a state day and boarding school. Girls are enrolled from year 9 (13 years) to year 13 (18 years approximately).

Subjects Available
Our school offers a wide range of subjects leading to university and polytechnic. Subjects include: mathematics; the sciences; economics, accounting and computing; four languages; the arts, technology subjects; the social sciences, English, ESOL and IELTS.
Facilities
The school is set in large, attractive grounds with mature trees. The school has a gymnasium, swimming pool, library, specialist drama, art and music rooms. There are modern technology rooms, computer rooms and science laboratories. Senior classes have 15 – 25 students.
Extracurricular Opportunities
There is a wide range of sports available including: athletics, basketball, badminton, hockey, netball, rowing, tennis and volleyball. Cultural activities include: choir, orchestra, drama, debating, Duke of Edinburgh.
Student Welfare
Our Director of International Students looks after the welfare of our overseas students. Our homestay co-ordinator is readily available to assist girls with accommodation issues. Guidance and careers staff are available to assist students with course choices, tertiary education enrolments and personal concerns.
Accommodation
Accommodation is arranged for students at NZ$190 per week. The homestay co-ordinator is responsible for the careful placement of students in homes or in our boarding house within the school grounds.
Academic Year
The academic year is from late January until early December. There are four terms in the year and students may enter in term 1, 2 or 3 but may not be eligible for any qualification if they do not complete the majority of the academic year.
International Programme
The school has 15 fee paying students each year from Asia and Europe as well as hosting several exchange students from around the world. All international students receive ESOL teaching leading to IELTs or literacy qualifications. International students mix freely with New Zealand students but also have their own common room facility.
Fees
Tuition NZ$10,500 per year, plus a one off fee of NZ$500 for initial enrolment, administration, collection from Christchurch Airport and orientation. Tuition fee covers all tuition, including hire of text books and ESOL lessons. Uniform costs approximately $700. Entrance to government examinations and involvement in activities such as sports is additional.
