Otumoetai College

General Description
Located in Windsor Road, Otumoetai College is a decile 8, state co-educational school. Our current roll stands at just over 1,850 plus 65 international fee-paying students and 25 students enrolled in our off-campus School for Young Parents.

Although originally built in 1965, the campus has been completely redeveloped thanks to a $15 million grant from the Ministry of Education. The result is a state-of-the-art well integrated educational facility for students, staff and the community.

Learning for All
We believe a co-educational school provides the environment for learning the skills and developing the attitudes which best prepares students of both genders for adult life. Our Student Learning Centre offers high quality targeted support for students with special needs as well as students who are identified as being gifted and talented. Our new Health and Wellness Centre is the central focus for student services.

Top Scholars
Year 11, 12 and 13 students study towards the NCEA. In 2005 our students gained 23 national scholarships – more than any other Bay of Plenty secondary school. A significant proportion of our Y13 students secured highly contested tertiary placements at top NZ Universities. Currently 10% of the partners in NZ’s leading law firm Russell McVeagh are past-pupils of the College – no other school has a higher percentage. Students are offered training and career pathways through the development of partnerships with local businesses.

Cultural Pursuits Enriching Learning
We have many musical groups; concert band, two jazz bands, symphonic band, stage band, two percussion bands, Manchoir, girls barbershop group, theatre sports, choir, several rock bands and other small ensembles. Debating, public speaking, and the Kapahaka group are also integral parts of College life. A new Performing Arts Centre is currently under construction which includes a purpose built performance venue, stage and new teaching spaces.

Sporting Endeavours
The college sports foundation promotes participation and excellence in 42 different sporting codes. For example: we are the current holders of three of the four national secondary school beach volleyball titles, ‘2006 top school title’ for Under-water Hockey and consistently national boys’ and girls’ senior volleyball champions. Thirty-seven past-pupils have represented NZ in a range of sports.

International Students
Local families host fee paying students from Asia, Europe and South America. These students enjoy experiencing New Zealand life while studying at the College. Our international programme was established in 1992 and offers a highly regarded programme of learning. The international student fee is NZ$11,000 per annum.

Adults Learning Too
New opportunities for learning are provided through the extensive Continuing Education for Adults programme that operates throughout the year. In 2006 there were more than 1,100 enrolments in 105 separate courses.
