Facilities
The school has impressive facilities which include:
Commercial Kitchen and Restaurant, Concert Band Room, Photographic Dark Room, and a 10 room state-of-the-art Technology Faculty (built 2002); a new, modern Science Department and recognised Business Studies Department; and over 500 computers, which are fully networked with access to a large school intranet database available anywhere in the school and at home via a modem.
Courses Available
The school has a national reputation for academic excellence and performance. Students are fully prepared for major school qualifications and also encouraged to enter other national and regional competitions. There is an emphasis on the basic subjects (English, Mathematics, Science and Technology) with individual tutoring available. Programmes are available which give credit towards National Certificates awarded by NZQA i.e. Computing, Technology, Office Systems, Tourism, Hospitality and Catering. The annual Prospectus and course handbooks give course outlines in detail.
Programme for International Students
The school provides a well structured, highly regarded, orientation and language support programme for ESOL students from non-English speaking backgrounds.
Student Welfare
The Director of International Students oversees all pastoral care matters. The Homestay Co-ordinator arranges homestays, and students have the opportunity to be part of a carefully selected New Zealand family. The school also has an extended Guidance Counselling network.
Extra Curricular Sports and Arts
A wide range of sports are played, and overseas students often participate in table tennis, badminton, tennis and golf. Excellent facilities are provided e.g. a swimming pool, two gymnasiums and sports pavilion. Individuals and teams achieve consistently at national competitions.
Students may learn a variety of musical instruments. The School Concert Band and Choir perform regularly, and musical and stage productions are presented each year. The school choir and concert band have won gold awards and national competitions. An active International Club organises activities and entertainment, including an International Week where students have the opportunity to exhibit their own culture to other students.
