General Description
Macleans College is a modern Auckland Secondary School, located in a pleasant part of East Auckland, overlooking the Hauraki Gulf. The current roll is approximately 2315 students
The College consistently ranks as one of the top five NZ State Secondary Schools for academic results, and is the top co-educational school.

International Students
Macleans has an unusually special character in that with a student body drawn from 45 different national and ethnic origins, it has a remarkable cultural and social diversity.

Cambridge University International Examination Courses
Of particular note for International Students is the provision of Cambridge public examination courses. These are now in their fifth year at the college, and students have shown a great deal of success.

Philosophy
Macleans has been unique in that physically dividing the school into eight separate “schools within a school” (each has its own building), the House system provides students with a strong sense of identity, with individual pastoral care from teachers able to pay attention to a small group of students, in a way that may not be possible otherwise. Each student is a member, not of a 2300 size school but of a 290 size mini school, but with the resources and values of the larger school.
The college aims to provide an education that develops all aspects of the individual student to the person’s potential, not only narrow academic performance, although that is a major aim.
This is achieved through a balanced program of academic, cultural, physical and social opportunities. Art and music are of special significance in the school. Care is taken to nurture positive traditional values and development of character.

Education Review Office
Macleans College has a very strong record of student achievement. Analysis of ‘value added’ data indicates that the school adds significantly to the performance of students. One particular feature of the achievement of the school is the very high levels of examination success... Students are offered a broad range of leadership opportunities.

English Language Support
The college has a strong English as a second language (ESOL) department. This means that the school is able to accept International Students who first need help with English in order to cope with the main stream courses, providing concentrated immersion courses.
