Detailed Profile
Golden Bay High School

Philosophy
Golden Bay High School students prepare for the future by learning the skills and knowledge, and developing the personal resources, that are needed to live satisfying and balanced lives. Teaching and learning programmes reflect the environment of the Bay with its rich history, its two National Parks and its proximity to the sea.
We cater for all students, whatever their needs. Part of our philosophy is to take into account the interests and abilities of each student. We devise individual programmes, to support maximum learning where necessary. English for Speakers of Other Languages is available for international students who need help.

Our School: Its Community and Environment
Our school and community have people of many nationalities. Many overseas students are attracted to this area because of its moderate climate, environmentally conscious lifestyle and the safe and caring community. Because of our small size, and the homestay accommodation, we limit ourselves to 10 International students each year.
There is also a strong focus on creativity in the area, with many arts and crafts people living and working in this inspirational landscape. Because of climate and beautiful surroundings, much of the recreation in the area is focussed around activities such as tramping, caving, fishing, boating, mountain biking, etc.

Special Features
An extensive outdoor education and education outside the classroom programme supports goals of building a healthy lifestyle, learning to cope with challenges and difficulties and building self-esteem. Students at all levels participate in an annual adventure programme, and students at Year 12 & 13 can specialise in this area. City visits, marae visits and field trips are included in teaching programmes at various levels. Our class sizes in the senior school are small, so students enjoy the benefits of low teacher student ratios.
Golden Bay High School employs 29 well-qualified teaching staff. The school has a designated International Director and a specialist ESOL teacher.
