Birkenhead College
Birkenhead College is a secondary school with 950 students offering a full range of subjects from year 9-13. It is situated on the north shore of the Waitemata harbour, only fifteen minutes by bus from Auckland city centre, and close to beaches and parks.
Location and Facilities
The school has spacious grounds surrounded by trees and playing fields and has excellent facilities including a theatre, computer rooms, drama and music suites, science laboratories, art rooms, library, a sports complex including two gymnasiums, pool and fitness centre, photographic laboratory and technology workshops.

At Birkenhead College we have high aspirations for our students and aim to develop each child’s full potential. In preparing students for the future, we place high priority on academic attainment and the importance of developing students’ self esteem, initiative, creativity and personal responsibility. The college is proud of its academic record and significant success in sport, cultural and community activities.
Academic Programme and Subjects Offered
Most of our students go on to tertiary studies. Students are prepared for Scholarships and the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) in Years 11-13. Our teachers are all highly qualified, trained and registered. Subjects offered are accounting, art, art history, biology, chemistry, textiles, computer applications, computer studies, design technology, drama, economics, English, ESOL, French, geography, German, graphics and design, history, Japanese, mathematics, music, music performance, photography, physical education, physics, workshop technology.
Extracurricular Programme
A wide range of sports and cultural activities are offered. Large numbers of students are involved in music groups, drama, choir, debating and sports teams.
Special Relations with International Students
Birkenhead College welcomes overseas students and the contribution made by them to our school culture. We have students from many different countries throughout the world.
Student Welfare
The care of our overseas students is a high priority. The Director of International Students, International Student Manager, ESOL teachers, Homestay Co-ordinator, Counsellors and Deans ensure that the needs of students are met. On arrival at the airport, students are met and taken to their accommodation.
Accommodation
International students live with a New Zealand family in a homestay situation. It is arranged by the school and enables the students to learn and practise English in a family environment.
English Language Support
Our ESOL department is a particularly strong feature of the college. Specialist teachers offer a variety of programmes ranging from Intensive English to Curriculum Support in an ESOL environment.
Tuition Fees 2009
Annual tuition fees are NZ$13,000. This includes the ESOL tuition. Homestay costs are NZ$220 per week.
