Jogo Como Ginga (Play with Sway)
The St Paul’s Soccer Programme
The St Paul’s soccer programme is based upon Brasilian futebol principles. The essence of the programme involves the players’ experience and practice of futsal, capoeira and exposure to samba music to develop what the Brasilians refer to as ginga. All the music to inspire the players has been composed, and sung by the pupils and teachers at the school. Their songs celebrate the jogo bonito. There is a strong emphasis on technical development and football artistry.
Ginga is an esoteric word which could best be described as rhythm, sway and dance-like athleticism; this is best personified in the incomparable and inspiring style of Ronaldinho and his expression of the jogo bonito.
The programme is producing noteworthy team and individual successes. In 2007 the team finished seventh at the Lotto Premier Tournament in Napier. In 2008 they finished 12th. In 2007 St Paul’s had two players from their 1st XI play against Brasil in the F.I.F.A. U-17 World Cup in Korea. In addition, Michael Built was selected for the NZ U-15 Secondary School team in 2007. Another 1st XI player in 2007 has been selected for the NZ U-17 Secondary School team in 2008. In 2009, Michael Built was selected for the NZ U-17 side, following in the footsteps of Chris Wood and Colin Murphy in 2007. Such team and individual achievements celebrate the inspiration of the Ginga.
